Exploring the Balkans: A Nature Lover’s Road Trip

As an adventure-seeking couple, there’s one experience that had always been missing from our travels: a road trip in a campervan. It had been on my bucket list for years, and finally, the dream came true—we rented a Webcamper for 2 weeks! I was thrilled, but honestly, I had no idea what to expect. Would it be easy to drive? How does everything work in a campervan? I couldn’t wait to find out.

Since we didn’t know what to expect, we chose to rent the fully equipped Weinsberg Cara Life 630 LQ—an innovative campervan with all-terrain wheels and two powerful batteries, giving us full autonomy for up to two days. We wanted to be ready for anything!

The itinerary:

Day 1-2 Luxembourg - Berchtesgaden (Germany)

We picked up our Webcamper in Canach, where we received a thorough introduction on how everything works. It went super smooth and I felt secure and confident as we hit the road.

Our first adventure started in Berchtesgaden. We took the cable car up to Jenner Mountain, followed by a hike to the summit. Later, we soaked in the peaceful ambiance by the lake and walked the short but scenic Malerweg (“Painter’s Walk”), which offers stunning views over the water. It´s also possible to take a boat ride across the lake - it’s a beautiful experience by itself!

Day 3-5 Berchtesgaden - Bohinj (Slovenia)

We continued our journey to Slovenia, where we headed to lake Bohinj. Once there, we took a boat across the serene lake and walked back along its scenic shores. We also hiked through the stunning Mostnica Gorge, all the way to a beautiful waterfall, and spent 2 nights at an incredibly beautiful camping spot right by the lake.

In the morning, we had breakfast in front of our camper and in the evening paddled on the lake with Webcamper’s SUP board. Honestly, I could get used to waking up in such breathtaking natural places.

Day 5-7 Bohinj - Zadar - Krka national park (Croatia)

On our way to Krka National Park, we made a stop in Zadar—a charming Croatian city where you can relax on the beach, enjoy cozy little restaurants, and listen to the mesmerizing sounds of the sea organ.

After our stopover, we continued to Krka, where we stayed at a beautiful, nature-surrounded campsite just outside the national park. The next day, we took our time exploring the park and were blown away by its stunning waterfalls. In the evening, we watched the sunset from our camping chairs, sharing a bottle of wine. Good thing our webcamper had a built-in bar!

Day 7-8 Krka – Livno – Mostar (Bosnia)

Today, we made a little detour to Livno - for a wild horse safari! It was breathtaking to watch the horses roam freely across the vast mountain meadows. We spotted several small herds, and were told that in summer, you can see groups of several hundred horses gathering near the water holes. Truly an unforgettable experience.

Later in the day, we continued our drive to Mostar, a beautiful town in Bosnia best known for its iconic stone bridge. Since it was off-season, we scored the best seats on the terraces, where we savored delicious Bosnian food and coffee in a relaxed, crowd-free atmosphere.

Day 8-10 Mostar – Blagaj – Durmitor national park (Montenegro)

In the morning, we visited the Blagaj Monastery, just a 30-minute drive from Mostar. Its setting and history are stunning! Afterwards, we continued our journey towards Durmitor National Park. Unfortunately, the weather turned, and it began to rain—but even so, the route through the remote, untouristed mountains was nothing short of magical.

Once inside the park, we stayed at a cozy “Auto-Camp,” where we ended the evening sipping schnaps and chatting for two hours with the camp’s friendly owner.

The next day, we tackled the famous Durmitor Ring - thankfully equipped with all-terrain wheels! The narrow, pothole-ridden roads made for an adrenaline-filled drive, but in the end, our Webcamper handled it like a champ. And the views were absolutely breathtaking!

Day 10-12 Durmitor – Una national park (Bosnia)

In the morning, we hiked around Black Lake—Durmitor’s most popular spot. Normally you get a clear view of the mountains, but the weather had other plans. Afterwards we drove to Una National Park by taking several panorama roads through the Tara Canyon - the deepest canyon in Europe.

The national park itself turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of our trip. Still a hidden gem, it amazed us with its beautiful nature, stunning waterfalls, and warm hospitality. We stayed in Kulen Vakuf and hiked to the old castle Stari Grad Ostrovica - a great spot that would also be perfect for sunset.

The next day, we visited Strbacki Buk and Martin Brod (again grateful for our all-terrain wheels!), two spectacular waterfalls. In the evenings we had the entire campground to ourselves, with the best riverside spot and no cell service—just peace, nature, and total relaxation.

Day 12-14 Una national park – Plitvice lakes- Walchsee (Austria)

We left Una with heavy hearts but started the day by visiting the Plitvice lakes in Croatia (a must if you´re in the area!) There are different paths you can take to explore. We chose the longest one (K) and spent a whole 7 hours admiring nature´s artistic waterfalls. We then continued our road, took an overnight break in Novo mesto and arrived in Austria for lunch the next day.

The lake Walchsee greeted us with breathtaking mountains, and perfect weather. On our first day, we walked around the lake, making plenty of stops for food, drinks, and just soaking in the views. The next day, we hiked up to the Harauer Spitze and spent the afternoon by the lake - swimming, paddling on the SUP, and reading in the grass.

And just like that, our road trip came to an end. It was an unforgettable journey, and one thing is certain: this won’t be the last time we rent a Webcamper!

Tips for the Road:

  • Vignettes: Always check if a vignette (toll sticker) is required for driving in each country.
  • Border Crossings: Some crossings are for locals only—do your research ahead of time to avoid detours.
  • Road Conditions: In certain countries or areas, road quality can be poor and may slow you down—plan accordingly.
  • Cash: In remote areas, card payments aren’t always accepted, so make sure to carry enough local currency.
